DAILY CURRENT AFFAIRS ON DEC 08 2016

1. National - Expansion of the mandate of Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Project Implementation Trust Fund
  • The Union Cabinet has given its approval for the expansion of the mandate of Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Project Implementation Trust Fund (DMIC-PITF Trust) and its re-designation as National Industrial Corridor Development & Implementation Trust (NICDIT) for integrated development of Industrial Corridors
  • NICDIT has also been permitted to utilize financial assistance already sanctioned within extended period up to 31st March, 2022
  • An Apex Monitoring Authority under the chairpersonship of the Finance Minister will be constituted to periodically review the activities of NICDIT and progress of the projects. It will consist of Minister-in-charge of Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Minister of Railways, Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Minister of Shipping, Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog and Chief Ministers of States concerned as Members
  • To accelerate the growth in manufacturing and for ensuring scientifically planned urbanization, Government of India
  • Government of India (Gol) has adopted the strategy of developing integrated Industrial Corridors in partnership with State Governments with focus on manufacturing
  • Five Corridors namely, Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC), Amritsar Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIG), Bengaluru- Mumbai Economic Corridor (BMEC) and Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC) have been planned for development by Government of India.
  • The five Industrial corridors presently cover the States, namely, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu

2. Science and Technology - PSLV-C36 Successfully Launches RESOURCESAT-2A Remote Sensing Satellite
  • In its thirty eighth flight (PSLV-C36), ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle has successfully launched the 1,235 kg RESOURCESAT-2A Satellite from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, Sriharikota
  • The PSLV has yet again demonstrated its reliability
  • The total number of satellites launched by India's workhorse launch vehicle PSLV including today's RESOURCESAT-2A has now reached 122, of which 43 are Indian and the remaining 79 are from abroad
  • RESOURCESAT-2A is a Remote Sensing satellite intended for resource monitoring
  • RESOURCESAT-1 and RESOURCESAT-2, launched in 2003 and 2011 respectively.

3. National - In an attempt to reach out to Army veterans, and create an interactive mechanism, the government has launched a mobile app called "Veterans Outreach App".
  • This will provide certain specific facilities to Army Veterans & Veer Naris on their android based mobilesVeterans Outreach Android App
  • The Veterans Outreach App has specific features like "Ask a question" and "Locator Services" that enable locating Ex-Serviceman Cells, ECHS Polyclinics, Station Canteens and Sainik Aram Garh's all across the country
  • The app also facilitates route guidance on a google map to any chosen service facility

4. State - Kerala Government has launched Haritha Keralam Mission, a comprehensive programme for creating new sustainable development perspectives in the state
  • The Haritha Keralam Mission is multidimensional development project focuses on water conservation, sanitation, environmental protection, and paddy cultivation

5. Person - John Glenn, first American to Orbit Earth passes away
  • He was first American to orbit Earth and had circled three times earth in 1962 aboard Friendship 7 space capsule
  • Inducted into the US Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990

6. National - PM Narendra Modi's decision to discontinue 500 and 1000 rupees notes has boosted the revenue of many civic bodies in Maharashtra

7. International - Pakistan International Airlines(PIA) flight PK-661 crashed with 47 people, five crew members and 42 passengers, on board a mountain near the town of Havelian, in khyber-pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan

8. International - English has been ranked first in the top 10 most powerful languages in the world according to the 2016 World Power Language Index (PLI)
  • The index was published by World Economic Forum (WEF)
  • According to the index there are over 6,000 languages spoken in the world.
  • Top 10 Languages in 2016 PLI: English (1st), Mandarin (2nd), French (3rd), Spanish (4th), Arabic (5th), Russian (6th), German (7th), Japanese (8th), Portuguese (9th) and Hindi (10th).
  • Hindi is 10th Rank
  • Hindi is most primarily language spoken in India with a share of 41%
  • The World Power Language Index (PLI) compares or ranks languages on their efficacy in the various domains.
  • It uses 20 indicators to measure the influence on language.
  • It measures the usefulness of a language to a representative human being.

9. National - The parliamentary constituency that recently became India's first to have health insurance for all is Vijayawada

10. Person - Trump named as Time magazine's person of the year:
  • The TIME magazine has named US President-elect Donald Trump as Person of the Year 2016 and called him the President of the 'Divided States of America'.
  • Trump had won the presidential elections, despite losing the popular vote by a record 26 lakh votes.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the 11 candidates shortlisted by Time for its annual honour.
  • Meanwhile, Modi won the online readers' poll conducted by Time magazine for Person of the Year 2016, the second time he emerged winner of the reader's choice poll.

11. State - Serendipity Arts Festival to be held in Goa:
  • The Serendipity Arts Festival (SAF) is scheduled to be held from 16 December to 23 December 2016 in Goa.
  • The festival will see a stellar line-up of 33 global artists, who will display their work at the eight-day inspiration-packed festival.
  • More than 40 exciting projects and exhibitions featuring famous artists, like Kabi Raj Lama, Bandu Manamperi, Escif, Billy Chang, SP Pushpakanthan, Lisa Stertz and Paquito Gonzalees, will be a part of the festival.

12. International - Justice Mian Saqib Nisar appointed next Chief Justice of Pakistan:
  • Justice Nisar will take charge as chief justice of the apex court on December 31, reports the Express Tribune.
  • Justice Nisar will replace Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, who is set to retire on December 30.

13. National - Cabinet approves Indo-Thai agreement on narcotics control:
  • The Union Cabinet has approved agreement between India and Thailand in controlling narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, their precursors and chemicals and drug abuse.
  • "The MoU is an effective framework to deal with all issues requiring mutual assistance and cooperation in the above areas," said a cabinet communique following the meeting. 
  • The MoU, once in force, would help in curbing transnational narcotics trafficking,"

14. National  - Union Cabinet approves MoU between India and UK to support Ease of Doing Business in India:
  • The Union Cabinet has given its approval to Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and United Kingdom (UK) to support Ease of Doing Business in India.
  • The MoU was signed between both countries earlier in November 2016 during the official state visit of UK Prime Minister Theresa May to India.
  • The MoU will facilitate exchange Government officials from both countries to facilitate sharing of best practises, technical assistance and enhanced implementation of reforms.

15. Banking - Nabard to provide Rs. 120 cr to banks for setting up PoS devices in villages:
  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) on 08 December said it will extend support aggregating about Rs. 120 crore to banks for deployment of two Point-of-Sale (PoS) devices per village in one lakh villages having a population of up to 10,000.
  • The move is aimed at taking rural India closer towards cashless payment systems.

16. State - Mobile banking service SIMsePAY launched in Arunachal Pradesh:
  • Arunachal Pradesh State Co-operative Apex Bank on 7 December 2016 launched Mobile Banking Service named SIMsePaY.
  • The service was launched in collaboration with the Yes Bank Ltd.
  • The SIMsePaY service was launched by the State Industries and Cooperation Minister Tamiya Taga is aimed at helping bank customers' in their cash crunch problem.
  • The SIMsePAY mobile service operates on simple phone handset on SMS without the internet.

17. International - Google parent Alphabet named company of the year by Fortune:
  • Google parent Company Alphabet has been named the company of the year by Fortune magazine in its annual Blue Ribbon ranking.
  • The list recognises the "best of the best" organisations that have appeared on four or more Fortune lists in 2016 like Fortune 500 and Most Admired Companies.
  • Nike and Apple rank third and seventh on the Blue Ribbon list respectively.

18. State - Microsoft launches solutions for SMEs:
  • Microsoft has introduced business solutions from its partner ecosystem to meet the business needs of small and medium businesses across Kerala.
  • Built by Microsoft's ISV partners Smarter SMB and IDOS, these solutions address key areas like Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Finance & Accounting and enhancing organisational efficiency.
  • These solutions will run on Microsoft cloud and will be available at very low cost.

19. Award - Karnataka Bank gets award:
  • Karnataka Bank Ltd has bagged the 'Best MSME Bank Award (private sector) 2016' instituted by Assocham.
  • Union Minister of State for MSME Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary handed over the award at a function in New Delhi on December 6.
